Ирландцы входили в число трех наиболее крупных этнических групп в североамериканских колониях. В XVIII в. на территории будущих США их насчитывалось более 500 тыс. Основная их масса оседала в Пенсильвании, и к 1750 ирландцы и шотландцы составляли около 1/4 ее населения. Иммиграция ирландцев резко возросла после 1820, во время т.н. "кельтской волны" ["Celtic" Wave]. В 1840-70 ирландцы, в основном католики, составляли до 80 процентов этой волны. В 1820-90 в США въехали более 4,2 млн. человек, что примерно равнялось численности населения Ирландии в конце века. Спад иммиграции начался после 1890. Этому способствовали такие факторы, как улучшение экономического положения в Ирландии, рост ирландского национального самосознания, национализм "коренных американцев" [ Native Americanism] в США и др. (в объявлениях о работе часто говорилось: "Ирландцев просят не обращаться" ["No Irish need reply"]). Закон об иммиграции 1924 года [ Immigration Acts] установил для них ежегодную квоту [quota] в 28,5 тыс. человек, что на практике лишь зафиксировало падение интереса ирландцев к иммиграции. В целом ирландцы оказали огромное влияние на американскую культуру и литературу, на формирование американского варианта английского языка [ American English].
